Ask not to be identified by name
Some sites using this software can work out that a visit came from a named person, using an email address they already hold. You can ask for that to stop for your address. The request applies to every site running this software, not just the one you came from.
What the request does
- From the moment it is recorded, no site running this software attaches your name to a visit using this address. The check runs on every visit, in the database, not as a setting somebody could forget.
- The visit itself is still counted, without you attached to it. A record that vanished entirely would quietly bias every later measurement toward the visitors who were allowed to be named.
- It also stops this software's own cross-site recognition. A site running it can recognise a returning visitor from a sign-in or a form filled in earlier on another site running it; from now on this address is never used for that either, on any of those sites, including ones added later.
What it does not do
- It does not remove anything already stored. It changes what happens from now on.
- It does not reach the random identifier stored by the site you visited. That belongs to that site, under its own address, and no button on this page could clear it — your browser's settings for that site can.
- It does not govern email. If you are receiving messages you did not ask for, unsubscribing from them is a separate thing, and this request does not do it.
What we keep because you asked
Only a one-way fingerprint of the address — not the address itself. It cannot be turned back into your address, and it is what lets the check run on a later visit without this becoming a list of the people who asked not to be listed. Nothing else about you is stored by this form.
Why we do not ask you to prove it is your address
Because the request only ever takes capability away. The worst a stranger could achieve by entering somebody else's address is that person stops being matched by name, which harms nobody. Asking you to click a link in an email to prove it would only put a working request at risk of being lost.
Changing your mind
For the same reason, this page cannot undo a request — a form that restored identification without checking who was asking would be worth abusing. Write to us and we will withdraw it.
